General Dynamics to lay off 23 in Springboro

General Dynamics will lay off 23 workers from its Springboro plant, the company told the state this week.

The workers at the company’s 200 S. Pioneer Blvd. plant will be terminated starting on or before Jan. 2, the company said in a letter to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The layoffs will affect both union and non-union employees. The job cuts are expected to be permanent, the letter said.

“This employment action is due to a sharp decline in work from the facility’s principal customers,” Ray Steen, General Dynamics human resources director, wrote in a letter dated Oct. 30.

The job cuts mark the company’s third round of layoffs this year at the same plant. General Dynamics laid off 29 workers from that facility in February. In August, the company announced it would terminate an additional 31 workers from its Springboro plant, starting in mid-October.

The plant had 187 workers when it was acquired by General Dynamics in August 2012.

Company officials did not respond to a request for comment.

The 240,000-square-foot plant makes rocket motor tubes for the U.S. Army’s Hydra 70 air-to-ground rockets. The plant also produces liners and cartridges for 40 mm ammunition rounds and components to its 60 mm-120 mm mortar rounds.

General Dynamics announced in July that it will merge its Armament and Technical Products division into its Ordnance and Tactical Systems division. The Springboro plant is part of the former division.
