Honda Indiana plant starts production of natural gas vehicle

Honda’s Greensburg, Ind., plant on Tuesday marked the start of mass production of the 2012 Civic Natural Gas, the company said.

“As the sole producers of the Civic Natural Gas, our associates in Greensburg are making an important contribution to Honda’s global effort to reduce CO2 emissions and advance the deployment of vehicles that can help the transition away from gasoline to cleaner and more sustainable alternative fuels,” Honda said in a statement.

Ohio suppliers work for the Greensburg plant, but not Ohio residents.

Second shift at the plant begins on Oct. 24, a Honda spokesman said.

The plant is now making final preparations to double its capacity, from 100,000 to 200,000 vehicles annually.

In Ohio, Honda Manufacturing of America has more than 13,000 workers, including about 1,300 Dayton-area residents who commute to Honda plants in Logan and Union counties, as well as a distribution center in Troy.

Last year, Honda made more vehicles in Ohio (587,304 vehicles) than GM, Ford, Chrysler and Navistar combined, Honda reports.
