A spokeswoman for Perrigo released a brief statement Friday afternoon, saying, “To meet the needs of our consumers and customers, we are expanding our infant formula facility in Covington, Ohio, which is a reflection of the great local workforce and welcoming community in which we work and live.”
She declined to offer details about the expansion.
The 400 Hazel St. plant had been a Kerry Inc. facility that was taken over by PBM Holdings, then a Gordonsville, Va.-based supplier of infant formula, a decade ago.
In 2010, Allegan Mich.-based Perrigo Co. then took over PBM in a $808 million cash deal.
At the time of the 2009 acquisition of the Hazel Street facility, PBM had about 500 employees worldwide and a history of acquiring facilities and growing employment. At that time, PBM produced Walmart’s “Parent’s Choice” formula brands.
Covington is about 10 miles northwest of Troy.
