Kroger announces leadership changes

Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. on Tuesday announced its succession plan for secretary and general counsel.

Paul W. Heldman will retire as the company’s executive vice president, secretary and general counsel in spring 2014. Heldman, 62, has served as general counsel since 1989, secretary since 1992 and executive vice president since 2006.

Christine S. Wheatley, Kroger’s vice president, senior counsel and assistant secretary, will be named secretary and general counsel upon Heldman’s retirement, officials said. The company expects its board of directors to elect Wheatley secretary and general counsel at a future board meeting.

Kroger in September announced that Chief Executive David Dillon will retire Jan. 1, but will stay on for another year as company chairman. President and Chief Operating Officer W. Rodney McMullen will assume the chief executive role in January as part of the company’s long-term succession plan.

Kroger is the largest traditional grocery retailer in the U.S., with 2,424 supermarkets in 31 states, including 23 stores in the Dayton market.
