Christmas Eve was a rough day for the giant supermarket chain Kroger.

Not only did the Cincinnati-based chain have to deal with technical issues that would not allow people to use their credit cards, it had to dispel rumors coming from a Facebook Kroger page.

The fake page claimed Kroger was giving away free groceries for Christmas.

Kroger tweeted on Christmas Eve that the Facebook posts promising a year’s worth of free groceries to four “lucky” families were fake and urged customers not to share the posts.

“This is a fake Kroger Facebook page,” the company wrote in response to a customer’s question. “We are aware of this fraudulent page and are working to address this matter. We recommend not engaging with the posting, and we appreciate your patronage.”
