Local distillery captures gold medal for its bourbon

Flat Rock Spirits — which bottles under the Stillwrights brand at its distillery in Bath Twp. near Fairborn — won a gold medal for its Stillwrights Straight Bourbon Whiskey in the 2015 American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA) Spirits competition held Sunday in Austin, Texas, the association announced today.

The competition drew 329 entries from more than 200 craft spirits distilleries from across the country.

Flat Rock co-founder Brad Measel said today that the gold medal was particularly gratifying because David Pickerell, the former head distiller at Maker’s Mark Bourbon, served as head judge of the panel evaluating bourbons.

“That’s big,” Measel said.

Two other Flat Rock Spirits products — Stillwrights Silver Rum and Stillwrights Bourbon Barrel Aged Rum — were awarded Bronze medals.

The ACSA is a trade association dedicated to promoting and lobbying on behalf of American craft spirits.

Flat Rock Spirits is owned by brothers Brad and Shawn Measel, and their cousin James Bagford. For more information, call (937) 879-4447.
