Local female surgeon gets national award

FAIRBORN – The Association of Women Surgeons has bestowed its most prestigious award on Dr. Margaret Dunn, executive associate dean of Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine.

Dunn, the first woman to practice general surgery in the Dayton region and now a specialist in breast surgery, received the Nina Starr Braunwald Award Monday during the annual AWS conference in San Francisco.

According to a Wright State news release, Dunn has supported the role of women in the Department of Surgery, which is led by Dr. Mary McCarthy and is one of six academic surgery departments nationwide with a female chair.

Dunn also serves as president and CEO of Wright State Physicians, the region’s largest academic multispecialty physician group.

The AWS Foundation gives the award to a surgeon in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of women in surgery.
