Macy’s will build a new distribution center for its outlet stores in Ohio, creating more than 400 jobs.

The plans include opening a Backstage distribution center in Columbus, which will create more than 400 jobs. Macy's also announced its plan to open 100 Backstage outlet stores, including one location in the Dayton region. The retailer will also open its first Dayton-area Backstage store in the Dayton Mall in June.

The retailer provided an update on the expansion of Macy’s Backstage, the company’s on-mall, off-price concept. The company opened approximately 20 Backstage locations in the first quarter of fiscal 2018 as part of its previously announced plan to open 100 locations within existing Macy’s stores in fiscal 2018.

By the end of June, the state of Ohio will have a total of 6 Backstage locations in the following markets: Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo.

“Macy’s has a strong business in Ohio, and we are excited to continue building our presence in the state,” said Jeff Gennette, Macy’s, Inc. chairman and chief executive officer. “This new distribution center will enable us to move merchandise to our Backstage locations faster and with more flexibility.”

The distribution center is planned to open in Fall 2019, and Macy’s, Inc. anticipates it will create approximately 400 jobs. This is in addition to the approximately 6,500 employees in Ohio who work at 24 Macy’s stores, one Bluemercury and the company’s corporate offices in the greater Cincinnati area.

The department store will open its Backstage outlet store at the Dayton Mall on June 2. The new outlet store will have approximately 12,900 square feet of dedicated retail space and will live on the second level inside the full-line Macy’s. The grand opening will be celebrated with giveaways for the first 200 customers and special events throughout the day.

“Our customers are excited about the Macy’s Backstage shopping experience,” said Michelle Israel, Macy’s Senior Vice President of Off Price. “Macy’s Backstage Dayton Mall was designed to bring great deals and the fun of the hunt into our existing location. If you’re looking for a fashion update, a last-minute gift, or a special treat for yourself, your home or your pet, we have you covered.”

The Dayton Daily News was the first to report about the Backstage outlet coming to the region. The estimated market value of the completed project is $75,000.
