After a “horrific” childhood, JT McCormick never planned to return to his hometown of Dayton. Then an unpaid bill from October of 1971 prompted him to make the trip back.

McCormick, the president and CEO of Scribe Media, a publishing company that helps people write, publish and market their own books, found an invoice for just over $422 from Miami Valley Hospital for his own birth. He realized it hadn’t been paid and reached out to the hospital to write a check in order to “pay my way into the world,” he said.

McCormick will return to Miami Valley Hospital on Wednesday and will speak at the Dayton Convention Center for a private event for Premier employees.

His company has worked with more than 1,500 authors and Entrepreneur Magazine recently ranked Scribe as having the “Top Company Culture in America,” according to Premier Health.

McCormick is also the author of “I Got There: How a Mixed-Race Kid Overcame Racism, Poverty, and Abuse to Achieve the American Dream.”

In his book, he describes being born to a father who was a pimp and an orphaned mother. His book tells the story of how he worked his way out of poverty, starting with his career cleaning toilets and eventually becoming the president of multiple companies.
