Meijer to use app that allows customers to self scan items

Area Meijer shoppers today can skip the line with a new scan-as-you-go tool launching in stores.

Shoppers who download the Meijer Mobile App can scan and bag their items as they shop, which will add each item to a running total that can be viewed throughout the shopping trip.

Once shoppers have everything they need, they’ll scan their phone at the self-checkout lane and pay.

“We’re all challenged by time and busy schedules, so Shop & Scan allows customers the opportunity to truly be in control of their shopping trip, from the moment they walk in our stores to the minute they walk out,” said Tom Wilson, Meijer regional vice president.

One of the most popular features on the Shop & Scan app is integrated shopping lists where items will be crossed off as they’re scanned and shoppers will be reminded if they forgot something before checking out. Meijers mPerks coupons are easily clippable for items that have been scanned, said Stephanie Brackenridge, director of customer experience.

The program is expected to reduce the number of plastic bags used because most Scan & Go shoppers take their reusable bags to the stores.

“A lot of our customers really have shared with us the benefit of touching that item only once in the grocery store and only once when they get home because you’re bagging it as you go and you’re able to put things together,” Brackenridge said.

The app has been downloaded more than 1.1 million times since the initial pilot launch in Michigan last year, Wilson said.

The Shop & Scan service is now available at 179 Meijer stores in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin and will continue rolling out to additional Meijer stores throughout the year.
