New brewery breaks ground in Springboro

Construction has begun on the region’s 12th brewery.

Crooked Handle Brewing Co. could open as early as mid-November at 760 N. Main St. (Ohio 741) in the Marketplace at Settler’s Walk retail center in Springboro. Workers have cut into the floor of the leased space to install drainage for the brewing system and are starting construction in other areas of the 3,600-square-foot brewery and tap room.

Crooked Handle will have a seating capacity of 50 to 60 inside and another 16 on a patio, said Jason Moore of Miami Twp., co-founder of Crooked Handle along with business partner Jeff Pedro Jr., also of Miami Twp.

The brewery will not have its own kitchen, but will partner with Dorothy Lane Market, located just around the corner within the same retail center, to serve sandwiches and other prepared foods that would be delivered to the tap room’s customers, Moore and Pedro said. Moore’s wife Kristy Moore will oversee the tap room.

The brewery’s owners say their long-term plans, after the tap room is established, involve leasing warehouse space to open a larger production brewery, first for kegs that would be delivered to area bars and restaurants, and ultimately for canning or bottling Crooked Handle’s brews for retail sales.

The brewery is planning to serve a broad range of beer styles, with a partial focus on beers that “bridge the gap” between mass-produced domestic beers and the sometimes-extreme, high-alcohol craft beers, its owners said.

“We want people to be able to come in here and have more than one beer,” Moore said.

Plans call for Crooked Handle to serve only its own beers, opening with a selection of four flagship brews, then ramping up to offer additional seasonal beers.

The success of the 11 breweries that have opened in Montgomery and Greene counties in the last four years — none has closed, and nearly all have expanded or are in the process of expanding — is an encouraging sign that the local craft-beer scene can accommodate more breweries, Moore and Pedro said. And there are no other breweries operating in Springboro or in northern Warren County.

“We believe there is plenty of room for growth,” Pedro said.
