Petco buys Dayton-based pet store chain

All 29 stores to stay open, and all 230 Petmart employees to transfer to Petco

Petco has purchased all assets of Dayton-based Complete Petmart, including its 29 stores. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The stores, located in the Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky areas, as well as in North Carolina and West Virginia, will remain open, the companies said in a joint statement. All 230 Complete Petmart employees will transfer to Petco, “meaning that local customers will continue to see the same familiar faces to help meet their pets’ needs,” the statement said.

San Diego-based Petco said it will “enhance the layouts of the newly acquired stores.” But for now, there will be no immediate changes to the stores, said Lisa Epstein, a spokeswoman for Petco.

“We saw they had a great operation in an area where we had an opportunity to grow,” Epstein said.

The 29 stores Petco is acquiring brings the company’s count of stores in the Buckeye State to 41, she said. None will be closed, and Complete Petmart employees will become Petco employees, she said.

“As of right now, everything is staying the same. We’re going to transition over time,” Epstein said.

Petco is a privately held specialty retailer operating nearly 1,100 stores in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Its nonprofit organization, the Petco Foundation, has raised nearly $70 million since its inception in 1999.

Complete Petmart was founded in 1985 by Clay and Mary Mathile, former owners of pet food producer Iams Co., and the first prototype store was called “Petfood Station.” The first Complete Petmart was opened in 1987 in Centerville. In 1995, the business was sold to Kevin Manley and Tim Rogers.
