Radio Shack releases list of store closings

Radio Shack on Friday released a list of stores targeted for closure, including 11 in the Dayton region, as well as locations in Springfield, Hamilton and Fairfield, as the struggling consumer electronics chain transitions to a greatly diminished role in partnership with Sprint.

It was not immediately clear when the stores would close or how many jobs would be lost. The closings will take place in three waves. Those identified for closing on a Radio Shack web site include:

• 1252 E. Central Ave. in Miamisburg

• inside the Town & Country Shopping Center in Kettering

• 7709 Hoke Road in Clayton

• 6228 Wilmington Pike in the Sugarcreek Plaza

• 162 Xenia Towne Square in Xenia

• 1063 S. Main St. in Centerville

• inside the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek

• 3504 Siebenthaler Ave. in Dayton

• 1272 E. Ash St. in Piqua

• inside the Upper Valley Mall in Springfield

• 1446 Main St. in Hamilton

• 3195 Princeton Road in Fairfield

• 1231 Columbus Ave. in Lebanon

• 2268 Michigan Ave. in Sidney

The store-closing list was released one day after Radio Shack filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company plans to sell 1,500 to 2,400 stores to its largest shareholder, investment firm Standard General, and is seeking court approval to proceed with closing the remainder of its 4,000 U.S. stores.

Wireless carrier Sprint Corp. has a deal with Standard General to open mini-shops in as many as 1,750 of the RadioShack stores Standard General is buying. Sprint would take up about one-third of the retail space in each RadioShack store, and Sprint employees would sell mobile devices and Sprint plans.

Sprint has more than 1,100 company-owned retail stores, which would more than double if the transaction is approved. It is expected to be finalized in the coming months. But other parties could bid for RadioShack’s stores in the bankruptcy process.
