The Development Services Agency wants the Controlling Board to release the money to Tipp City for road work supporting a Meijer expansion in Miami County, where the company has a distribution center and a $100 million dairy.

The roadwork would extend Abbot Parkway west 1,100 feet, according to a meeting agenda item. The extension of Abbott would include curb and gutter work on an industrial roadway with an enclosed storm sewer management system, according to a project description.
The project is expected to protect 976 existing jobs while allowing the creation of 137 “full-time-equivalent” jobs, according to state documents.
A commitment letter to the state from Matthew Spring, Tipp City development director, says the created payroll would reach $9,063,255, not including benefits.
Meijer will retain 976 existing jobs with an associated annual baseline payroll of $36,503,952 exclusive of benefits, the letter also said.
Meijer Distribution Inc. has been positioning itself for an expansion in that area since it first built a distribution center and dairy in Tipp City some six years ago. In early 2018, the company purchased about 160 areas of land in the area for $1.55 million.
Before that, in June 2016, the grocer bought nearly 60 acres near its dairy facility, about 59 acres of farmland on South County Road 25A.
The dairy production facility was built to help Meijer deliver products faster to stores across Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
“We purchased the land for future flexibility, but have no immediate plans to build or develop,” Meijer spokesman Joe Hirschmugl told the Dayton Daily News in 2018.
A message was left for Hirschmugl Tuesday.
