Rumpke is getting bigger in Dayton

Waste hauler and recycling company Rumpke has positioned itself to expand in Dayton through a big land purchase — but the company isn’t offering details on those plans just yet.

This news outlet reported Tuesday that Rumpke Waste Inc. has invested $675,000 in four parcels of land totalling just over seven acres in Dayton.

The land is found off Wagner Ford Road and Webster Street. Rumpke bought 1.67 acres off Webster Street as well as three parcels off Wagner Ford, including a three-acre parcel with a commercial garage, according to Montgomery County property records.

The seller was Waste Management of Ohio, which operates a landfill at 2670 Wagner Ford. The transaction was recorded late last week.

“The purchase of land off of Wagner Ford is part of our plan to invest in our Dayton operations,” Andrew Rumpke, East area president for Rumpke, said in an emailed statement in response to questions from the Dayton Daily News.

Today, the company’s Dayton office has about 180 employees in hauling operations, sales, customer service, portable restrooms, glass material recovery, recycling and maintenance.

“Part of our plan for the newly acquired property is to expand existing operations,” Rumpke said. “We are looking forward to enhancing the property and further solidifying our roots in the Dayton community.”

A Rumpke spokeswoman, Gayane Makaryan, on Wednesday said the company is exploring options for the land, but she also said the company wasn’t ready to make any definite announcements. The company is looking at expanding a number of its operations, perhaps its maintenance shop, hauling or glass recycling operations. She said one distinct possibility for the land is a maintenance operation, of both vehicles and equipment.

There probably won’t be a definite announcement until 2019, she added. And there are no plans to close operations in other areas, as a result of the expansion, she also said.

“We’re going to do something with that land,” Makaryan said.

One reason for the expansion is the winning of several new municipal contracts in the area, including Miami Twp and Tipp City, she said.

And while she couldn’t offer definite numbers, she said Rumpke is consistently looking to hire more people locally.
