Springboro IGA to shut down, costing 20 jobs

The Springboro IGA grocery store at Ohio 741 and Ohio 73, which was founded in 1958, will shut down in early December, co-owner Doug Preston said this morning. The closing will affect 20 employees.

“We just can’t keep losing money week after week,” Preston said. “With all the big (grocery) stores around, it’s hard to compete these days.”

The store is discounting its stock 25 percent now and will close after its going-out-of-business sale is complete, which will likely be in early to mid-December, Preston said.

Preston, whose father was the IGA store’s founder, owns the shopping center that houses the grocery store, and he said talks are underway with the city of Springboro that may lead to the city buying the property. No deal has been signed, Preston said.

Kroger, which already operated a grocery store on West Central Avenue (Ohio 73), recently opened a large store in the Austin Landing development in Miami Twp. on Ohio 741 just north of Springboro, and Dorothy Lane Market also operates a grocery store in the city.

Preston said there’s a chance he’ll reopen in a smaller facility, but no decision has been made.

“This is hard on me. I’ve been here since I was 8 years old,” Preston said.
