Two Kettering restaurants shut down

KETTERING — The Starlite Diner & Restaurant at 4090 Wilmington Pike closed earlier this week, and Cafe Mexico at 1122 E. Dorothy Lane also has closed.

Mahmut Kilic — whose family operated the Kettering diner and who also operate a second Starlite Diner & Restaurant at 2627 S. Smithville Road in the Belmont neighborhood of Dayton — said his family closed the Kettering location because of slow business and high costs of rent and utilities. They may explore the possibility of opening a second location in the future, Kilic said.

Signs on the door of the Wilmington Pike restaurant refer customers to the Dayton location, which opened a year ago in the building that previously housed the Nanking Inn for more than 25 years.

Kilic said the Smithville Road restaurant seats 80, while the Kettering restaurant seated about 150. Eight employees were affected by the closing, he said. The Belmont restaurant is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For more information about the Smithville Road Starlite Diner, call (937) 254-5000.

Also closed is Cafe Mexico, which had opened in August at 1122 E. Dorothy Lane in the restaurant space that previously housed several other restaurants, among them Amore Mia, Casa Amici, Amici’s Place, Millie’s Philly Cheesesteaks, and Barbie’s Bistro.
