United Way hunting for new digs

DAYTON — The United Way of Greater Dayton said Wednesday, Aug. 12, it plans to put its Salem Avenue building on the selling block and move to new offices in or on the “periphery” of downtown.

The change is meant to help the organization cut costs and focus on providing community services, executives said in a statement.

The group occupies about 12,500 square feet of its 56,000 square-foot United Way Community Services facility, located at 184 Salem Ave., a United Way news release states. United Way is seeking between 10,000 and 12,000 square feet to replace its current digs, officials said.

“The United Way recently determined it was time to get out of the landlord business,” Allen Elijah, the organization’s president said in a statement. “Managing the building takes too much time away from our mission, and right now we need all energy focused on meeting the increased demand for services in our community.”

United Way officials want to move by the end of first quarter 2010.

Gem Real Estate Group will represent the United Way in finding a new space and selling its current building, a news release states.
