The University of Dayton Research Institute has just won a $25 million Air Force contract to work on munitions materials research, the Department of Defense said.

The five-year contract will support research and development of new fuze technology and energetic materials to develop, demonstrate and transition technologies with applications in fuzes for air-delivered weapons, the department said.

The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract going to UDRI will be for the research and development of fuze technologies and what the department called “energetic materials for munitions effort.”

Energetic materials refers to substances with stored chemical energy poised for release, such as explosives.

The first task order will be a $415,000 award for what the DoD called the “terminal burst point control sciences effort.”

Work will be performed at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, and is expected to be completed by September 2021, the DoD said in a release late Monday.

The university won the contract in a competitive acquisition. Funds in the amount of $90,000 are obligated at the time of the award.

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Eglin was the contracting agency. AFRL is based at Wright-Patterson, here in the Dayton area.
