University lands $46M Air Force research contract

The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) has been awarded a $46 million contract to research materials for the U.S. Air Force.

The contract to UDRI is for research in the area of advanced behavior and life prediction of aerospace materials. a Department of Defense announcement said late Tuesday.

Among the areas UDRI researchers will study: aerospace materials, processing, performance assessment, and prediction tools; rapid certification of aerospace structures; increases in efficiency and readiness of turbine engine components; structural protection against high-energy events and more.

Work will be performed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and is expected to be completed Oct. 15, 2026.

This award is the result of a “One Step, Closed Broad Agency Announcement,” and there was only one proposal received, the DoD said. That’s a way for the government to request scientific or research proposals from private firms or colleges. Such announcements don’t always lead to contracts.

Fiscal 2019 funds in the amount of $2,018,628 will be obligated at the time of award, and the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright Patterson was the contracting activity.
