After recent Dayton Public Schools’ contract action, a firm deploying substitute teachers, Parallel Education Division, said it will permanently close its Dayton office, affecting 184 employees, the company has notified the state.

It is expected that many of the substitute teachers and school aides covered by Parallel’s WARN (Worker Adjustment Retraining Notice) notice will eventually work for the new agency with which the school district will contract.

Parallel is a contractor that runs substitute teacher operations for Dayton Public Schools and other school districts around the country. The people covered by this notice are substitute teachers and school aides who work in Dayton Public Schools. Many of those individuals also substitute in other school districts.

DPS announced late last month that starting next fall, it will contract with a new agency — ESS Northeast, LLC, formerly Source4Teachers — to provide substitute personnel.

The company is located locally at 15 W. Fourth St., Dayton.

In a letter to the state, the business said the contract change “will result in a permanent layoff of those employees who physically work at the Dayton office and may effectively result in a permanent layoff for those substitute teachers and paraprofessionals who received and accepted assignments for the Dayton Public Schools.”

The company also noted substitutes may continue to accept other assignments at other charter schools through Parallel’s system.

“However, the number of assignments available will be drastically reduced and may effectively lead to the permanent loss of employment for certain substitute employees,” Parallel added.

The Dayton Board of Education approved a three-year $12.9 million contract with ESS Northeast May 27.
