Wilmington Air Park set for $3 million in infrastructure work

The Clinton County Port Authority’s Board of Directors has approved $3 million in infrastructure work at Wilmington Air Park, the board announced late Thursday.

The board approved five projects in all, including runway work. The park will also buy a runway visual range system, replacing the aging current system. Work will be finished this spring, the board said.

Two of the “projects address concrete repairs on the Air Park’s primary runway, as well as replacing and relocating navigational aids for that runway,” Dan Evers, the port authority’s executive director, said in a statement.“These infrastructure improvements are important to the airport, and our ongoing commitment to keep it active and safe.”

Support from the Ohio Division of Aviation and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) makes the work possible, the board said. ODOT funds will make possible work on the taxiway and ramp areas adjacent to the runway.

The port authority said it will match ODOT funds equivalent to 21 percent of the total project cost.

“We believe we will be able to both allocate the necessary matching funds, as well as complete the full project specification, bidding and award the projects within the state’s timeline,” Evers said.

“We will continue to need to repair and replace the aging infrastructure at the Wilmington Air Park,” board Chairmen Walt Rowsey also said in the statement. “There is a lot of pavement here, and the support of our state and local officials, with grant funds, is absolutely essential to allow us to maintain and upgrade the airport.”
