“It looks like we’re running out of room,” Leet said while covering the grounds on a golf cart.
It was apparent that this was a Chevy lover’s event, with the Bow Tie brigade making up at least half of the entries. There was everything from an old Chevy pickup, lots of Camaros, Tri-Fives and plenty of both old and new Corvettes.
There were awards in five categories: Classic Muscle Car, Truck, Street Rod, Best Engine and Best Paint, all judged by Voss staff and other experts.
“The awards are very unique, designed by Brad Voss and built by Kevin Fry out of used engine parts. They are very cool, and we also have one extra, which we call the Voss Hoss Wild One. It will be awarded to the car that creates the most buzz, sort of a People’s Choice Award,” Griffin added. “We are also using this show, and the next two, to bring back the Voss Hoss, our TV commercial character from a few years ago. It will re-introduce the Voss Hoss to a new generation.
“Our staff has really embraced this show. We have over 60 people volunteering their time to help with this, and all proceeds from donations and a 50/50 raffle go to The Fisher Houses, which provide housing to veterans and military families receiving treatment at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base’s medical center,” she added. “We wanted to give something back to both the community and our customers - an event with the emphasis on enjoying cars and not selling them.”
Mike Karns of Bellbrook Automotive was on site with his 1957 Chevrolet convertible. “This is just great - far bigger and better than I expected. It’s a new event, which is great. They have a huge lot and it’s well organized. What a great way to spend a Friday evening, and it also helps Fisher House. Doesn’t get much better than that!” he said.
Karns’ ’57 Chevy, a beautifully restored machine, was his first car.
“I bought this in 1970 when I was 16 years old. It was my daily driver for many years, and then sat for a long time. In 2008 I went all out and did a frame-off restoration, and here it is today. I’ve only driven it about 1,400 miles in the eight years since I finished it, but I just go to local shows like this.”
Voss will also host two other car shows this summer at their Loop Road Pre-owned Car Center: July 15 and Aug. 19.
