The Red Brick Reunion or RBR as it is known, is in its seventh year and was founded by Walter Chin and C. Steve Nelson as a dedicated Porsche car show to pay tribute to the late John Dixon.
Dixon had a ceaseless passion for all things Porsche and through the Taj Ma Garaj, Dixon’s former personal Porsche museum and event facility, he used the cars as a way to raise money for the less fortunate. Dixon’s events raised many thousands of dollars for children’s health issues.
RBR has made donations to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life to continue the research and fight against all forms and types of cancer as well as to other deserving charities. Last year the RBR group decided to add Honor Flight Dayton to its list.
During the presentation of a $1,000 check in late January, Chin said, “This contribution is made in honor and respect of the hard work, dedication and sacrifices Honor Flight Dayton – you and your staff – continue to provide. Further, the Dayton Honor Flight is recognized for outstanding performance and sustainment of Honor Flight operations as well as serving and supporting veterans in our local and surrounding communities.”
In closing, Chin also said, “We wish you and your team all the best throughout the new year as Honor Flight Dayton continues its successful mission.”
The director and president of the Honor Flight Dayton hub, Al Bailey, expressed deep appreciation of the Red Brick Reunion donation and highlighted the importance of the Honor Flight Dayton mission.
“Our mission is to take veterans of the World War II, Korean-era and Vietnam-era wars to see their national memorials in Washington, D.C. Priority is given to terminally ill veterans from any of these wars.
“These trips, both via air or our Recreation Vehicle Convoy ground transportation program, are provided at no cost to all qualified veterans which includes airfare, bus transportation while in D.C., meals, T-shirts and disposable cameras,” Bailey said. “Every donation, large or small, is welcomed and deeply appreciated. Costs for a charter flight, ground transportation, medical teams and logistics support are in excess of $90,000 per flight.”
There are two flights and one RVC trip currently scheduled for 2020. One flight is already scheduled in May; the other trips are in the works.
Plans to expand RBR from Aug. 6 to 8 as a multi-day event are in the works. That Thursday’s kick-off will include the Uptown Music Concert series featuring The Blue Leafs, a Dayton music entertainment venue. Porsches shall be on display highlighting the beginning of the festivities launching RBR weekend.
At press time, Friday’s plans include a road tour of the area’s scenic back roads followed by a pub crawl of local bars.
Saturday will bring all models of classic and newer Porsches arriving at 8 a.m. along with show opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. There will be live music by Thunder Bay, a Cincinnati band. Awards are presented at 2 p.m. and a closing parade begins at 3 p.m.
All entrants are encouraged to participate in the police-escorted drive to Hueston Woods State Park to conclude RBR 2020 festivities.
While donations are encouraged to support RBR charities, families and spectators are invited to this non-profit, non-admission car show featuring the Porsche marquee.
