Crews found a fire in the basement’s utility area, according to the fire department. All the occupants were evacuated.
Firefighters used rapid fire suppression tactics to contain the fire.
Jim Parker, who identified himself as the building’s maintenance man, said the electrical fire was mainly kept to the basement.
“It started to come up the floor of unit five but everybody got cleared out of the building and the fire department was able to contain and put it out at the same time,” he said.
Parker and another tenant reportedly knocked on each unit’s doors to try and alert people.
“[We were] beating on the door to get people evacuated as fast as we possibly could,” he said.
The pair also helped residents with getting some of their belongings out.
“I’m just glad that everybody got out safe and sound and nobody was injured,” Parker said.”
No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is helping residents displaced by the fire.
A damage estimate was not available. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
