Kettering City Schools is updating its master facilities plan to assess district buildings and prepare for future needs.

The Board of Education last week approved a contract with Ruetschle Architects, based in Dayton. The firm, which has worked with the district for decades, is familiar with Kettering’s facilities and was the lead architect on major renovation work in 2002.

For the first time, Kettering Schools is eligible for significant Ohio Facilities Construction Commission funding. The district would receive 43% of construction costs if the district chooses to partner with the state commission, said Kari Basson, district community relations and auxiliary services coordinator.

“We’re in the discovery phase. We’re looking at what the options are,” she said.

However, one thing is certain, she said: “Our facilities do need work. Our buildings are old.”

Kettering School leaders are projecting the need for a new levy request possibly as soon as next year as they eye potential new school construction or renovations.

During the process of creating its master facilities plan, the district will seek input from residents, with a community forum likely to be scheduled in March.

The first phase of the new master plan is likely to address grades six through eight and partial nine through 12, and the second phase would address pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and partial nine through 12, according to a letter from the firm included in the school board packet.

It will include site assessments of the school buildings and a review of previous facilities plan work, studies and surveys along with an Ohio Facilities Construction Commission assessment report.
