One person is in custody after a Franklin police pursuit ended in a crash near the Austin Landing shopping center in Miami Twp.

Franklin Police Capt. Brian Pacifico said that the pursuit began Monday evening when a Franklin officer was patrolling the Pilot truck stop in the city and found what they believed to be a fake registration tag on a vehicle.

The officer followed the vehicle when it left the truck stop, Pacifico said, and after confirming the tag was fake the officer tried to stop the vehicle.

On Interstate 75, the car took off at a high rate of speed with police in pursuit, the captain said. The car headed north and exited to Austin Boulevard, crashing soon after into a crosswalk pole at the intersection with state Route 741.

The crash knocked the pole down into a concrete island and was not blocking the road, Pacifico said.

The driver of the vehicle got out and fled on foot before being arrested behind the nearby Connor Group building.

Several law enforcement units, including police cruisers from Springboro and Miami Twp. were at the intersection following the pursuit, and officials were searching the vehicle.

Pacifico said that the suspect, a 35-year-old man, was on parole for previously fleeing from police and was spooked when the officer tried to pull him over.

The captain said that he had “gone from just getting a ticket to running from the police” again.
