Dayton man indicted for allegedly stealing car with butcher knife, leading police pursuit

A Dayton man accused of stealing a car with a butcher knife and leading police on an 11-minute chase has been indicted on multiple felony charges.

Christopher Ray Palmer, 35, was indicted Friday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court on one count each of aggravated robbery, robbery and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.

He is currently in custody at the Montgomery County Jail, and is scheduled to be back in court on Aug. 27, according to court documents.

The charges stem from Aug. 13, when at around noon a man was reportedly getting out of his car in the 1900 block of Wayne Avenue when Palmer approached with a butcher knife and demanded the keys.

According to an affidavit filed with the Dayton Municipal Court, a fight started and the man ended up with his back on the ground with Palmer over him.

“During the struggle, (the man) dropped his keys and Palmer picked them up,” the affidavit said. “While Palmer was trying to start the vehicle, (the man) approached Palmer in the driver seat and sliced him in the face in an attempt to get him to stop taking his vehicle.”

However, Palmer started the car and drove away, managing to elude capture for several hours, court documents said.

The man was reportedly cut on his right arm by the knife Palmer was holding.

Police learned of the car’s possible location and saturated the area with police crews, eventually finding Palmer at around 3:10 p.m. Palmer did not stop, leading to an approximately 11-minute-long pursuit that ended when an officer used a precision immobilization technique.

Cruiser camera footage shows the pursuing officer push on the back corner of the stolen vehicle with the nose of the cruiser, pushing it out of control before the car stops.

At the time, Dayton Police Lt. Mark Ponichtera said that police successfully deployed tire deflation devices multiple times on the vehicle during the pursuit.

Cruiser camera footage showed Palmer weaving through traffic during the pursuit, at one point narrowly missing a school bus turning at an intersection and clipping the mirror of another car.
