A Dayton police officer was stabbed with a knife Thursday afternoon while responding to a call regarding a mental health issue.

The officer, whose name was not released, was wounded around 3 p.m. inside a house in the 1500 block of Bancroft Avenue, He was taken by cruiser to Miami Valley Hospital, where Lt. Col. Eric Henderson said the officer was in stable condition.

Dayton police announced on social media at 8 p.m. that the officer had been stabbed in the neck, but that the knife missed any major arteries. The officer was treated and released from the hospital but will be off while recuperating from his injuries.

Dayton officers gathered in a show of support outside the hospital, where their police cruisers lined the street in front. Forensic technicians were seen examining the cruiser that brought the officer to the hospital.

Henderson said the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center received a call at 2:33 p.m. related to a mental health issue.

“The call takers could hear a commotion in the background, and it was a female that called for assistance dealing with her son,” he said.

The wounded officer was one of those who responded and entered the home. It is still under investigation what transpired, but Henderson said at 2:59 p.m. radio traffic indicated that an officer had been stabbed.

“At that point in time additional officers arrived on scene. The suspect was taken into custody with no injuries and transported to the Safety Building. … Our officer was immediately loaded in a cruiser and transported to a hospital,” Henderson said.

Homicide detectives, which investigate serious injury crimes, and the department’s professional standards bureau are conducting investigations.

It is too early to determine what charges the suspect may face, he said, but the social media post said he was booked into the Montgomery County Jail with several felony charges pending.

“This really stresses the importance or how difficult officers’ jobs are dealing with situations, especially when someone is dealing with a mental health type issue,” Henderson said. “We’re fortunate at this time the officer appears that he is going to be OK.”
