When police tried to contact the man in one of the hotel rooms, he refused to open the door and threatened to shoot the officers, the release said. After trying to get the man to give himself up for 45 minutes, police requested the Montgomery County Regional SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Team to respond.
Negotiations continued over “numerous phone calls” over the course of several hours, the release said.
Finally, SWAT “introduced copious amounts of tear gas to the motel room through the front windows,” and eventually the man came out.
He was immediately arrested and taken to Miami Valley Hospital for evaluation due to the gas exposure, police said.
Police said that alcohol or drug use could have been a factor in the standoff.
The man is held in Montgomery County Jail pending approval of charges by the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.
