An early investigation into a man found dead from apparent gunshot wounds near the Great Miami River Recreation Trail in Harrison Twp. indicates that the crime may have happened elsewhere, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Maj. Matt Haines said.

Jarvis Collins, 36, of Dayton, was found Thursday night after a 911 caller reported a suspicious vehicle and some people on the bike trail near Embury Park Road.

When Five Rivers MetroParks rangers responded, the SUV fled. The rangers found Collins' body while they were checking the area. Investigators believe his body was left there, but that he was not killed near the trail.

“It appears that this crime probably did not happen at that location,” Haines said. “It may not have happened in Harrison Twp. But it looks like they were trying to dump the body there.”

The sheriff’s office has identified multiple persons of interest who they are trying to contact, but would not provide additional details.

Haines said they are lucky that someone saw the SUV and decided to call 911.

"We say ‘see something say something,’ and we’re glad that somebody picked up the phone and alerted the regional dispatch center so that we could go check this out, he said. “… Who knows if this person would have even been found if this citizen had not called us?”
