Third man charged in connection to Dayton Detective DelRio’s death sentenced to time served

The third and final defendant charged in connection to the deadly shooting of Dayton police Detective Jorge “George” DelRio was sentenced to time served earlier this month, according to federal court records.

Lionel Combs III pleaded guilty to maintaining a drug premises in February. On Dec. 16, he was sentenced to time served with three years of supervised release, according to U.S. District Court Southern District of Ohio documents.

Judge Michael Newman ordered Combs to be released immediately. He was to report to the U.S. Probation Office in Dayton before Dec. 20.

In September, Combs’ co-defendants, Nathan Goddard and Cahke Cortner, were sentenced to life in prison.

“The Dayton Police Department is pleased to see the sentences imposed against Nathan Goddard and Cahke Cortner in the tragic shooting of Detective Jorge DelRio,” Dayton Police Chief Kamran Afzal said following the sentencings. “They mark a significant step of closure for Detective DelRio’s loved ones, our department and our community.”

Goddard was found guilty of murder following a trial in March. He and Cortner were also convicted of multiple drug and firearm charges.

On Nov. 4, 2019, DelRio was serving a search warrant with other DEA Task Force members at a Ruskin Road house. The task force knocked on the door and entered after no one answered.

Combs was reportedly in the basement with Goddard and Cortner when he heard knocking. He went to answer it but was stopped by Goddard and directed away from the basement stairs, according to court records.

DelRio was heading down into the basement when Goddard shot him, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Ohio. DelRio died three days later on Nov. 7, 2019, at Grandview Medical Center, now Kettering Health Dayton.

Police found 10 kilograms of fentanyl and cocaine, 50 to 60 pounds of marijuana and more than $55,000 in cash in the house, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

DelRio was a 30-year police veteran and was on the DEA Task Force for 18 years. He was the longest serving task force officer in the DEA Dayton Resident Office and the second longest serving task force officer in the Detroit Field Division, Dayton police said.

His colleagues described him as light-hearted, funny and someone who would always cheer up others. DelRio was also known for his love for his family, including his wife, four daughters and sons-in-law.
