Party control of the Ohio General Assembly
1947 to present

Ohio House of Representatives

After this year’s elections, Democrats will go into the 2015-2016 Ohio General Assembly with the fewest number of House of Representative seats either party has held since 1954. The Ohio House of Representatives was dominated by the Democrats in the 1980s before the Republicans took control in the mid-1990s. After one Democratic majority in 2009-10, the Republicans again grabbed control in 2011. Here is a breakdown of party control of the Ohio House since 1947. Note the number of seats was reduced to the current 99 seats in 1967.

Ohio Senate

Republicans next year will keep control of the Ohio Senate, where they have steadily increased their advantage since taking the majority in 1985. This year’s election left Democrats with 10 Senate seats in the 2015-2016 General Assembly, which is what they have had since 2011. The last time either part had fewer than 10 seats was when Democrats held only 7 seats in 1952. Here is a breakdown of party control of the Ohio Senate since 1947.
