The University of Dayton will shine a spotlight on talented students at its annual Celebration of the Arts on Tuesday, March 16, at the Schuster Center. The program, featuring performances by UD theater, dance, vocal and instrumental music students is free and open to the community.

“Celebration of the Arts is part of UD’s annual Stander Symposium, which showcases student learning, creativity, collaboration and research,” said Andrea Meyer Wade, UD’s Stander Symposium coordinator.

“Almost 200 students will perform at the Schuster Center.” More than 1,000 people attended the 2009 event.

Prior to the showcase, a visual arts display and a faculty performance will take place in the Schuster Center Wintergarden.

“The preshow entertainment and visual arts display an hour before the 8 p.m. curtain should be as captivating as the main stage event,” Wade said.

“The jazz combo and piano ensemble will perform along with an improvisation on a new sound sculpture designed in an interdisciplinary course taught by Dayton artist Michael Bashaw.”

The student phase of the program features the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, a theater selection from the Moliere comedy “Scapin,” the world music choir performing South African and Chinese selections, the UD Dance Ensemble and more.

“The University of Dayton Jazz Ensemble and the Ebony Heritage Singers close the show together with a performance of two pieces arranged by saxophonist and 2002 music graduate Bobby Streng,” Wade said.
