More than 54,000 patrons saw 'Wicked' at Schuster Center

DAYTON — The three-week run of “Wicked” at the Schuster Center ended Sunday, March 7, but Victoria Theatre Association officials already were celebrating the musical’s success and looking forward to several other big shows waiting in the wings, calling it “a big year for Broadway in Dayton.”

The cast of “Wicked” — a story parallel to “The Wizard of Oz,” but from the perspective of the witches — played the last two of their 24 performances Sunday to capacity crowds, with about 100 people vying for the last seats to Sunday night’s show via a ticket lottery.

Victoria spokeswoman Diane Schoeffler-Warren said final figures were not available, but she estimated attendance for the three-week run at more than 54,000 and said it was comparable to the Schuster-opening visit by “Phantom of the Opera” in 2003, which played to 97 percent capacity.

“It’s been a huge success,” said Sue Stevens, Victoria’s vice president of marketing. “We’ve been thrilled with it.”

Bellbrook siblings Joel and Alicia Nitsch were seeing “Wicked” for a second time and called it “amazing.” Julia Maurer of Sidney was at the Schuster Center for the first time Sunday, and after seeing the show she said she hopes to come back in June for “Phantom of the Opera.”

Victoria officials are excited about the lineup, from “A Chorus Line” on April 27 to May 2, to the three-week run of "Phantom of the Opera” on June 9-27, and even Disney’s “The Lion King” in summer 2011, which Schoeffler-Warren said they “have wanted to get for years and years.”

Josh Stucky of Dayton said he’s a regular at the Schuster Center, and after seeing “Wicked” on Sunday, he said he likes the quality of shows coming to Schuster.

“(It’s) a great show, and it’s good for all of us to be able to come together and see something like this in Dayton,” he said. “I feel like Dayton’s catching fire a little bit, which is awesome.”
