August is for foodies: Burgers, brats, bacon, beer and more

There are several food events in August that speak to the flavors of summer — the meats grilling, the fresh produce, the lively, bright flavors and the cold beer.

If you are looking for things to do that involve food in the next several weeks, here are the events that are on our short list.

Hardcore burger fanatics rejoice! More than 20 restaurants are offering $5 burgers for an entire week.

Burger deals range from gourmet to the chefs special.

According to organizers, the idea is to get people to embrace the local food and culture while getting them out to eat, drink, and try new places. The offer is good for dine-in only.

After a burger, there’s nothing better than a grilled dog when you are doing some casual dining. Schnitzel dinners, brats, metts, German potato salad, sauerkraut, Gürkensalat (cucumber salad) will all be sold alongside German draft and bottled beers to support Dayton Liederkranz -Turner, a 128-year-old organization dedicated to preserving German heritage in the Miami Valley. Three German-style beers will be specially brewed for the Fest by the Dayton Beer Company: Lost Tunnel/ Mitternacht im Munich (Midnight in Munich), a Munich amber lager; a light German Pils, and a dark German dunkel lager.

🍻 Beer! A Celebration of Dayton Brewing

During the summer in a hot, hot heat, there are a few days where no dish quite satisfies like a cold beer.

This Aug. 16 event at The Yellow Cab Tavern is your chance to sample the best our local brewers have to offer. It’s at the monthly Yellow Cab Food Truck Rally so there will be plenty to eat as well.

Entry is free. $20 in advance gets you eight 6-ounce pours in a commemorative glass.

At the 38th Annual Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival, there’s only one star of the show — delicious, crisp, sunny steamed sweet corn from Brentlinger Farms. Some of the greatest joys in food are the most simple. This is a festival that celebrates that truth.

Another option: If you can't make this festival, Fulton Farm's Sweet Corn Festival happening on Aug. 24-25 is another great opportunity to enjoy fresh, fantastic corn-on-the-cob.

Authentic hand-made Lebanese food will be available for sale including Kibbee, Falafel, Kafta, Beef and Chicken Shawarma (“Lebanese gyro”), Tabouli and Salata salads, stuffed grape leaves, hummus dip, homemade Middle Eastern mountain bread with zhatar seasoning; and fresh Lebanese pastries like baklawa, ghraybeh and nammuoora. These dishes are infused with fresh, exciting, bright ingredients that are alive and vibrating with flavor. This is a festival with traditional Middle Eastern dishes that will delight alongside the dancing, entertainment, cultural displays and crafts.
