Band of Flight, DPO to mark anniversary of 9/11

Cost: Free. All the free tickets have already been claimed to attend this event. However, free overflow seating with a live video feed of the concert will be provided in the museum's Carney Auditorium.

The Air Force Band of Flight will partner with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra on Tuesday to commemorate Patriot Day. Tuesday is the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on American soil.

“A range of emotions, from heartache to resolve will be explored in this year’s program,” said Becky Taylor, publicist for the Band of Flight.

Highlights of the program will include “Jupiter” from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst, a tribute to United Airlines Flight 93 titled “A Field in Pennsylvania” by Nancy Bloomer Duessen, and Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait,” and the world-premier performance of “The Limits of Remembrance” by Band of Flight composer Tech. Sgt. Scott Wise.

“Dayton is lucky to have two such top-drawer professional musical ensembles. The mix of rousing patriotic music plus elegiac and contemplative music to honor those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, makes for a deeply moving and inspiring experience for everyone,” said Neal Gittleman, Dayton Philharmonic music director and principal conductor.

Band of Flight Conductor 1st Lt. Daniel W. Boothe is also pleased to work with both ensembles. “It is such a privilege to share the stage with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. When you see the mix of blue and black attire on the stage, you realize you are experiencing a truly powerful collaboration.”

This will be the final year for the Band of Flight in its current form. “The band is reorganizing from 45 to 15 members in 2013, so this year’s concert will represent the final large-scale collaboration of the Dayton Philharmonic and the Band of Flight,” said Taylor.

The Band of Flight will perform two more concerts before the end of the year, on Veteran’s Day in November, and a holiday concert in December. Check the website for free ticket information.
