"Luke Perry represented what makes our state great — generosity, humility, and a fighting spirit. Connie and I join the Mansfield and Fredericktown communities in offering our deep sympathies to Luke's family and friends on their loss," Senator Brown said in a statement to the press.
Brown's wife, columnist Connie Schultz, noted the family connection on Facebook Monday, the day Perry died from the stroke he suffered Feb. 28.
Very saddened by this loss. Luke Perry was not only a talented actor—but a warm, kind person who made his home state proud. My thoughts are with his friends, family, and loved ones. https://t.co/MuSHhLsWOA

"Luke Perry has died, and our family is heartbroken. He was born in Mansfield, Ohio, delivered by Sherrod's father, Dr. Charles Brown, she wrote on Facebook. "When Sherrod first ran for the Senate in 2006, Luke came to Ohio and campaigned with him. He was funny, smart and kind. At the height of his fame, he was still an Ohio boy, so gracious with every fan.
When my father was dying at the age of 89, Luke called my dad about a week before he passed, and said, "I'm thinking about you, Doc," and wished him well. Luke was so kind and considerate of others. He will be very missed. pic.twitter.com/UcF9VQ53zl
