New restaurant from the Sweeneys

Ron Sweeney and his wife Christy — who together founded Sweeney’s Seafood Restaurant in Centerville in 1994 and sold it in April 2012 — have purchased the former Bosco’s (most recently Arthur’s and Toscani’s Restaurant) at 5900 Bigger Road across from the Oak Creek Plaza in Kettering near the Centerville border. The couple said they plan to open a neighborhood pub in March.

Ron Sweeney said he has a name in mind, but declined to reveal it until he determines whether it has been trademarked elsewhere.

Several Dayton-area restaurants shut their doors in 2013 for various reasons, as we recently reported in the article '13 area restaurants that closed in 2013.'

Despite the closures, the local dining scene is far from bleak. As a matter of fact, it’s thriving, as several new eateries opened in the area last year.

Below are 10 restaurants that opened in 2013 — there were several others — and three to look for this year.

Lily’s Bistro

Blind Bob’s owners Lisa and Robert Mendenhall opened Lily’s Bistro in May. The business managed by their daughter Emily is at 329 E. Fifth St. — the former site of Boulevard Haus/Cafe Boulevard.

Flyboys Deli

Steve Crandall and his wife Eunice Kim opened the deli in January 2013 at 2515 Far Hills Ave. in Oakwood.

It is the former location of the short-lived Cooper’s Deli.

Salar Restaurant and Lounge

Salar Executive Chef Margot Blondet and Manager Harry Trubounis opened their business at 410 E. Fifth St., the former site of Sidebar and Pacchia, in May.

“We are serving a world fusion menu,” Trubounis told us. “(Blondet) graduated first in her class from Le Cordon Bleu in Lima, Perú, so she blends the flavors of her roots with her training in Italy and France. … She will create dishes that are a true fusion of flavors from all over the world.”

The sister restaurant of Meadowlark, 5531 Far Hills Ave., Wheat Penny started building its name as a gourmet pizza restaurant with scrumptious entrees before opening its doors last fall.

It is located at 515 Wayne Ave., the former site of Coco’s Bistro.
