Vandalia restaurant: Sweet with Lychee Dragon, spiced with peppercorn fish

Shen’s Szechuan & Sushi doesn’t look much different than its predecessor Mr. Lee’s, but the restaurant at 7580 Poe Ave. in Vandalia is clearly riding on its own coattails with delicious dishes and whimsical cocktails.

The spacious and stylized restaurant owned by Peter Song and Shen Xie is creating an identity aside from Mr. Lee’s.

Peter Lee retired from the restaurant business about a year ago and sold the property to Song, his acquaintance, and Xie.

Xie had been Mr. Lee’s executive sushi chef for four years.

What we ordered: I dived into the Peppercorn Fish, $16.95. The dish's large slices of melt-in-your-mouth flounder was packed with heat and sweetness that exploded on my taste buds. Warning: this is not for the spice timid. It has a good amount of garlic and chili peppers, which I love.

The dish is a Shen’s favorite.

As Alison our waitress explained, the Peppercorn fish originated on the traditional Chinese menu, but made its way to the main dinner menu due to customers request. It is served with rice.

The healthy portion is more than enough for two people to share if one or two appetizers or/and sushi rolls are also ordered.

I paired my meal with a Lychee Dragon, $8.50. Served in a martini glass, this bright drink is made partly with cranberry juice and lychee infused vodka.
