There are many ways to save on trips to the movies.

The average U.S. movie ticket price in 2011 was $7.92, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners.

We asked representatives of some of the bigger movie chains in this region to help you find the best deals at area theaters this summer. Be sure to check with theaters in your neighborhood not in this list for their special deals and promotions. This is a sampling of some of the great deals you can find this summer.

Showcase Cinemas

  • Matinee tickets cost $7.75 before 6 p.m.
  • Bargain Tuesday pricing applies to all movies. Admission is $7 for all seats. Admission for IMAX®, IMAX® 2D, IMAX® 3D, and Digital 3D formats is $9. Bargain Tuesday pricing excludes special events, holidays and holiday evenings.
  • Senior Wednesdays pricing applies to patrons age 60 and older. Discounted admission is $5.50. The reduced price applies to all movies, including IMAX®, RealD 3D and movies playing in Directors Hall auditoriums. Premium fees are waived where applicable. Senior Wednesdays pricing excludes special engagements and events, holidays, and holiday evenings.
  • Student prices are available with a student ID after 6 p.m. for $8.
  • Active military pricing is available with a military ID for one ticket per ID. Matinee active military pricing is $5, and evening active military pricing is $7.
  • Admission to Kidtoons — special G-rated movies for younger children — is available for all patrons for $3.50 per ticket. Children also receive a coupon for a discounted kids concession combo. Kidtoons is presented the second weekend of the month, both Saturday and Sunday, at noon.

Rave Cinemas

    The Dixie Twin Drive-In Movie Theater

    • Tickets cost $8 for adults (13 years old and up) and $1 for kids (5 to 12 years old). Tickets cover the viewing of two movies, for less than the price of one at most indoor theaters.
    • Tickets for children 4 and under are free.
    • For the past two seasons, the theater has offered deals through Groupon.com.
    • The theater also has a Facebook page (facebook.com/dixietwin) where special deals are sometimes posted.
