There’s a tasty cafe in the basement of this iconic Dayton building

We tend to get excited about new restaurant openings -- there’s that hope that with each new culinary discovery, there’s a new favorite place to grab grub with friends and family.

But what if a new discovery was right under your nose and not new at all? Dayton has one such place that has become an institution, though you may have no idea it exists.

The Square & Compasses Cafe, located in the basement of the Dayton Masonic Center at 525 W. Riverview Ave. may be a newer name, however, the location has been serving hearty meals for more than 50 years.

The Masonic Cristo, served with ham, turkey, maple bacon and cheddar and Swiss cheeses on French toast with strawberry jam, is one of the most popular items on the menu.

“It used to be a cafeteria stop,” manager Leslie Frost said.

For decades, people would file in and fill all three rooms of the eatery. Frost recently took over the location and, with some remodeling, has transformed the venue into a place featuring good ol’ American home cooking.

From soups, salads and subs to the classic burger and the more modern wraps, the S & C Cafe certainly has plenty of options. However, they’re also known for the all-you-can-eat buffet, served every Wednesday. Though that awareness seems to come mostly from a stalwart group of regulars.

The weekly all-you-can-eat buffet special always features soup, salad, pasta, meat, potatoes, vegetables and a dessert.

The experience comes with retired Daytonians sharing stories of the past and talking about the events of the day. A somewhat sassy waitress trades barbs with the guests. Oh, and did I mention the tour? Meals come with a free three-story tour of the Masonic Center, built in Grecian style and opened in 1928. It doesn't get much old school than that.

As Frost spoke, she pointed over to a table of gentlemen.

"They are the Frigidaire Crew," she said. "They've been coming here (for about) 60 years. When they were young, they all started coming here when they worked (at Frigidaire)."
But Frost, who also handles outside catering orders, said there seems to be an assumption by most that you have to be a member of the Masons to dine at S & C Cafe.

“We’re open to the public. A lot of people don’t know it,” Frost said.

Now that the word is out, more Daytonians may soon be discovering a new old favorite.
