“We’ve always been in a constantly fluctuating state,” Montgomery said. “We have moments of lift and moments of near fatality at all times. It’s been like that for six years and that’s the exciting part of it.”
R.Ring’s captivating debut album, “Ignite the Rest,” recorded in Montgomery’s Candyland Studio, gets its official release via SofaBurn Records on April 28.
“It’s funny because here I am in this band with a studio guy and I didn’t want to record,” Deal said. “I wanted to play live. I wanted to write songs and go from show to show. I wanted this immediate aspect of here’s what we’re going to perform — what you hear right here is the song and this is what it’s about. I didn’t want to go into the recording studio.

“As we started to accumulate songs, I remember thinking I was ready for an album,” she said. “I had an idea ‘100 Dollar Heat’ would sound awesome with a cellist. We had met several drummers. Montgomery echoes Deal’s sentiments on the importance of outside supporters and collaborators.

“Kelley and I have been involved with other people the whole time we’ve been involved with each other,” he said. “All these other people have been in the life of this project. This album is really a celebration of all the relationships, all these threads that tie us all together. That’s what this tour is about. That’s what this year is about and we’ll continue acknowledging that as we put our feet forward.”
R.Ring launches its spring tour at the Southgate House Revival in Newport, Ky., on Wednesday, April 19.
“Mike and I really lucked out when we met through the Buffalo Killers,” Deal said. “We were both working with loud rock bands, so that itch was getting scratched. We didn’t need to explore anything in that realm. We were both open to a sonic and physical journey in sharing music and here we are six years later.”
