Some of the members have changed since New Regrets formed in November 2013, but the focus is still on old-school punk.

The Dayton-based group — Ed Pittman (vocals), Matt Clark (guitar), Cody Clark (bass) and Elliott Harrell (drums) — celebrates its debut CD with two events on Saturday, April 8. New Regrets host a listening party for "Confrontation" at Omega Music in the Oregon District from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by a release show at Blind Bob's at 10 p.m.

Pittman and Harrell sat down at Press recently to discuss the new album.

IN THE STUDIO

Pittman: "We recorded with Fredzo at Fredzoz. He has a nice studio in Kettering. The Jackalopes and Dark Backward recorded there. He did a great job for us."

Harrell: "I joined the band two years ago. Most of these songs were written with me on them. We did two days, two sessions, with Fredzo. We recorded 22 songs and 16 of those made the album. A few didn't make the cut."

Pittman: "A couple of the songs on the album are from the 7-inch, but we redid them."

CLEARING THE SHELVES

Harrell: "This record was a purge of all the songs we had. We were getting tired of some of them so we wanted to record them. We wrote a few new ones and made the record."

Pittman: "The whole record is a good blend of classic hardcore punk and a little bit of '70s rock element. Matt loves that old-style guitar."

Harrell: "We're always trying to mix the '80s hardcore punk with '77 punk and rock 'n' roll. It's easier to write more authentic punk rock that way instead of trying to rip something off completely."

MAHERN MASTERING

The album was mastered at Mahern Audio in Indiana by Paul Mahern, a former punk rocker who has worked with acts like John Mellencamp, Iggy Pop and Willie Nelson.

Pittman: "Paul is Mr. John Cougar now but I've known him since his Zero Boys days. He gave us a bit of a deal to master it."

A HOMETOWN LABEL

“Confrontation” is being released by Dayton-based indie, FFF Records, which has released records by Dirty Socialites. Later this month, the label is releasing SKRT’s “Toxic Schlock.”

Pittman: "We've known (FFF's) Derek Gullett for a while. We found out he was doing this label and he's been really good."

Harrell: "It was harder than we thought to find somebody to put the time and money into putting out a record and Derek didn't flinch. Finding him was a real pleasant surprise."
