Editor’s note: The Dayton Ombudsman Office provides weekly columns to the Dayton Daily News to bring awareness to issues it sees in the community.

The Ombudsman was contacted by a man who is a volunteer with a local school. The man enjoys his volunteer role at the school and helping the children. The man has been volunteering with the district for eight years. In recent years he has been assigned to different schools. He wants to continue to volunteer at a particular school where he has volunteered in the past. After the holiday break, he has not been contacted by the principal at the school of his choice to confirm he can return to volunteering at the school. He asked the Ombudsman office to find out why he has not received his volunteer assignment and to intervene to help him receive his assignment to the school of his choice. He added that he knows other volunteers who have been at the same school for a long time.

The Ombudsman contacted the Superintendent of the district and reported the man’s concerns and provided the name of the school where the man wants to volunteer. The next week the man received a call from the principal of the school where he wants to volunteer and was offered a volunteer position. The man was most pleased with the outcome.

The Ombudsman Column, a production of the Joint Office of Citizens’ Complaints, summarizes selected problems that citizens have had with government services, schools and nursing homes in the Dayton area.
