Editor’s note: The Dayton Ombudsman Office provides weekly columns to the Dayton Daily News to bring awareness to issues it sees. The column was recently moved to the Ideas & Voices section to help readers identify solutions to common problems in their communities.

A woman contacted the Ombudsman after she applied for Medicare Part A and Part B. Part A Medicare covers hospital costs, and Part B covers medically necessary and preventive services. After several weeks she received a notification from Medicare and discovered she was enrolled in Part A, but was not enrolled in Part B. She notified Medicare, a form was sent, and she completed it and returned it promptly. Because she was not covered by Part B, she cancelled some doctor appointments. She also became concerned that she might receive a penalty for the month it has taken her to try to get the issue corrected.

To assist the woman, the Ombudsman contacted the Ohio Department of Insurance and the Social Security Administration on her behalf. We were reassured that the enrollment in Part B Medicare could be completed, and to do so she needed to mail a new form, an application for enrollment in Medicare - Part B to her local Social Security office. She also needed to state that she was covered three months prior and was in her initial enrollment period for Medicare Part B. In this way, she could avoid a penalty.

The woman completed the form as requested and received notification as to when her Part B coverage would begin. She was delighted to have everything resolved.

The Ombudsman Column, a production of the Joint Office of Citizens’ Complaints, summarizes selected problems that citizens have had with government services, schools and nursing homes in the Dayton area.
