Radelet says the friendship helps the Little develop the confidence and skills they need to perform better in school, and to have healthier relationships with kids at school and with their family.
The organization serves children who primarily come from single-parent households and also helps pair a Big Brother or Big Sister with foster children and children of incarcerated parents. They are also working to expand military mentoring to support children of military parents.
In addition to the volunteers who are always needed — both as mentors and to help in the office and at events — here’s the current wish list:
- Office supplies
- Easels
- White board for the conference room
- A couch for the reception area
- Computers
For outings and shared time together, Bigs and their Littles always need:
- Tickets to sporting events, plays, movies and concerts.
- Gift certificates.
- Children's books.
- Arts and crafts supplies.
- Prizes for kids' achievements
Items can be delivered from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to Joe Radelet, CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters, 2211 Arbor Blvd., Moraine. For more information, call (937) 220-6860, visit www.bbbsgmv.org or email jradelet@bbbsgmv.org.
Here's one more way you can help: the Bowl for Kids' Sake fund raiser is coming up on Saturday, March 16. The idea is to get together a team of five, with each person raising a minimum of $65. On the day of the event, each team bowls two games and enjoys free pizza and a drink at Poelking Woodman Lanes, 3200 Woodman Drive in Kettering. Time options are 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. For more information on the event and to register, see www.bbbsgmv.org/bowl
