What you get: With this book, there's no need to shop at a gourmet grocery store or own fancy kitchen appliances or utensils. This collection of mainly one-pot, skillet and slow-cooker dishes calls for common ingredients you'll find at the grocery store. Chapters include: Beef, Pork, Chicken, Seafood, Sandwiches, Casseroles, Sides, Breads and Desserts. There's also a final chapter titled "Pantry," which includes recipes for sauces and other basics, such as Meringue (Page 281), My Go-to Milk Gravy (P. 285), Buttermilk Substitute (P. 288) and Sweet Tea (P. 289). We want to try Lasagna (P. 33), Oven-barbecued Chicken (P. 87), Big Fat Greek Taters (P. 202) and Pineapple Cobbler (P. 242)

In her own words: "We may have high hopes and aspirations when we set off into the world each morning, but if you really want to make the world a better place, end the day by coming home to supper." – Christy Jordan

What we made:

7UP Bread (P. 222)

½ cup (1 stick) butter

2 ¼ cups Hearty Oat Baking Mix (P. 219) or store-bought biscuit baking mix

½ cup sour cream

½ cup 7UP or other lemon-lime soda

1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.

2. Place the butter in an 8-inch square baking dish and put it in the oven to melt.

3. Meanwhile, combine the baking mix, sour cream and 7UP in a large bowl and stir until it is well blended and forms a soft dough. Carefully remove the baking dish from the oven and spoon the dough over the melted butter in the dish.

4. Bake the bread until lightly browned on top, 12 to 15 minutes. Allow it to cool slightly, then cut it into squares and serve warm.

Our assessment: This recipe is so simple and the results are so delicious. For all the taste-testers, it was difficult to say no to a second slice. They were downright perfect, but that didn't stop us from dreaming larger dreams. We made a second batch, this time adding ¾ cup cheese, ½ teaspoon garlic powder and a dash each of Italian seasoning and dried parsley. Our inspiration was one of America's most sought-after restaurant recipes: Red Lobster's Cheddar Bay Biscuits. Our version turned out to be a pretty good copycat recipe. Just don't blame us if you can't stop eating them.
