Gem City Jewel: The world’s first speeding ticket

Besides being famous for appearing in 245 films, like “City Lights” with Charlie Chaplin, Harry C. Myers was also a writer and director of a number of silent films.

What isn’t as well known is the fact that Myers was caught speeding through Dayton in 1904 in his Winton automobile. Clocked at twelve miles an hour on West Third Street, Harry was pulled over and given the world’s first ticket for speeding in an automobile.  It isn’t known if he tried to talk his way out of it, but as he wouldn’t appear in his first film until four years later, he couldn’t have banked on his fame at the time.
