“We recycle the pull tabs for their salvage value, and put that money toward our mission of providing a “home-away-from-home for families of hospitalized children,” explains Cara Wells, operations manager. “With so many dedicated folks collecting these tiny tabs on our behalf, we are able to raise about $16,000 per year through our recycling efforts.”
Pull tab collections can be brought to the Ronald McDonald House (555 Valley St., Dayton) any day of the week, between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m
“Since we know illness can occur at any time, our doors never close and there is a guest service manager available 365 days a year staffing the House and accepting donations, including pull tab collections,” Wells adds.
Additionally, pull tab donations can be brought to the annual pull tab collection contest, Tab-a-Pull-Ooza, a family-friendly event where everyone is invited to bring their pull tab collections, large and small.
The event is slated from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the PNC 2nd Street Market, 600 E. Second St., in downtown Dayton.
Collections are weighed, and then emptied into a commercial dumpster, which has been filled every year.
“This event truly illustrates what a community who ‘pulls together’ can accomplish,” Wells adds.
Ronald McDonald will make an appearance and at the end of the event and prizes are awarded to the top collectors in three categories: individual, group and school.

It’s especially appropriate to have this fundraiser in Dayton, because the pull tab was invented here by Ermal Fraze. He and his invention are featured in the Inventors River Walk at RiverScape MetroPark in Dayton.
